Help your child remember the Palm Sunday story with Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem with this easy donkey Palm Sunday craft.
If you’re looking for a sweet Palm Sunday craft to help kids remember the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem (Matthew 21, John 12), there are three crafts your child will enjoy making.
One is the Hosanna Branch Wavers craft, the second is the Paper Palm Cross, and the third is this sweet donkey.
Where does the donkey feature in the Palm Sunday story?
When you read Matthew chapter 21 in the Bible, you learn how Jesus instructs his disciples to bring a colt, the foal of a donkey, for him to ride into Jerusalem on.
This is in fulfillment of what was said in Zechariah 9:9-
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.”
So why not create a sweet donkey craft?
Materials Needed To Make This Palm Sunday Craft
- Popsicle sticks/ craft sticks
- White card stock
- Gray or brown paint (I was out of gray paint; hence, my donkey is painted brown!)
- Paintbrush
- Googly eye
- Black paper
- Light brown felt
- Double-sided tape
- Scissors
How to Make This Sweet Donkey Palm Sunday Craft
- Begin by arranging five popsicle sticks to form the lower body of the donkey. Take another popsicle stick and cut it in half. Attach these halves to the back of the assembled sticks using double-sided tape.
- Paint four popsicle sticks brown and allow them to dry. Trim one side of each stick, then use a black marker to draw an oblong shape at the bottom.
- Cut out the donkey template and trace it onto cardboard. Paint the cardboard brown and let it dry. Attach a small piece of brown paper to the tip of the donkey’s face. Use a marker to add a googly eye, or draw the eye and add details to the neck.
- Cut a strip of black paper and then into small strips to create the hair. See the picture below for reference.
- Cut a small circle from brown felt, then cut it in half to make a half-moon shape. Trim strips from it and color them black using a marker. Attach this mane at the upper right corner of the popsicle stick.
- Cut out a tail and paint it gray/brown. Once dry, attach the tail’s hair to the bottom.
- Finally, assemble all the parts of the donkey together.
How cute is this sweet donkey?
