If you love egg rolls but have been looking for a healthier (and yes, keto-friendly) alternative that is not deep fried, this Inside Out Egg Rolls recipe is a must-try!
If you’re like me and love egg rolls but don’t have the patience to roll and wrap each egg roll or want to deep fry the rolls, then this recipe is a winner.
This recipe is also great for busy families aiming for a healthier lifestyle. It’s not only bursting with flavor but also aligns with ketogenic diets.
Wait! What are Inside Out Egg Rolls?
Inside out egg rolls, also known as “inside-out spring rolls” or “egg roll wraps,” are a unique twist on traditional egg rolls or spring rolls.
This is also known as the Egg Roll In A Bowl recipe!
In a typical egg roll or spring roll, the filling is enclosed within a wrapper, and the entire roll is deep-fried or baked. However, with inside-out egg rolls, the ingredients are rolled up on the outside of the wrapper, and they are not deep-fried.
The best part is you can choose to make this a veggie-only dish, or opt to use ground beef, chicken, turkey, or even pork.
What Are the Key Ingredients Needed to Make Inside Out Egg Rolls?
Cabbage takes the spotlight in this dish, usually shredded, providing a satisfying crunch and a hint of sweetness. Plus, it’s low in carbs, making it an excellent choice for keto-friendly recipes.
Carrots contribute natural sweetness and vibrant color to the dish, whether shredded or thinly sliced. They pair wonderfully with cabbage and enhance the overall texture.
Garlic plays a pivotal role in elevating the flavor of this recipe. Crushed garlic cloves infuse the dish with rich, spicy notes.
Freshly grated ginger adds warmth, spice, and a citrusy zing. It harmonizes beautifully with the other ingredients, adding depth to the overall flavor.
Sriracha, a popular hot sauce crafted from chili peppers, garlic, sugar, and vinegar, lends spiciness and a tangy, garlicky kick to the Keto Egg Roll in a Bowl recipe. Adjust the amount of sauce to your liking for spiciness.
Sesame paste/tahini brings a creamy, nutty essence to the dish, imparting richness and a subtle sesame flavor. It’s a common ingredient in keto recipes, providing healthy fats.
Soy sauce, a keto-friendly option, flavors the dish with its low-carb, salty, and umami goodness. If you prefer gluten-free, you can also use tamari sauce or a healthier alternative- coconut aminos.
How to Make Inside Out Egg Rolls
1. Heat some oil in a frying pan or wok. Grate the ginger and garlic after peeling them. Put the grated ginger and garlic into the hot oil in the pan. Let this cook for 1 minute.
2. Add the ground meat and stir-fry until fully cooked, using a spatula to break up any clumps.
3. Peel and finely chop the onion. Add the chopped onions and carrots to the pan. Cook over high heat for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally.
4. Now, include the cabbage.
5. Pour in the soy sauce/ coconut aminos and Sriracha sauce.
You can add a little water or stock if the cabbage seems dry.
6. Cover the pan with a lid and simmer over low heat for approximately 20 minutes until the cabbage turns soft.
7. Add the sesame paste to the end of cooking and give the dish a good mix.
8. Just before serving, toss some chopped green onions into the pan and give it a final stir. This will add a fresh, vibrant touch to the dish.
You can sprinkle sesame seeds on top for extra texture and visual appeal if desired.
