A few days ago, my son woke up with a sore throat. He’s not a fan of warm water and salt gargling, so I had to think of how to nip a sore throat in the bud.

Anyone knows how miserable a sore throat can make a child feel and how worrying it is for parents to see their child that way.

I needed to find a way to soothe his throat using the proven treatment of using warm liquids.

I decided to brew an age-old remedy that has worked great on my throat.Homemade remedy for a sore throat

All the ingredients are 100% natural and 100% safe for a child to consume.

The spice aspect takes some getting used to, but when you mix the concoction with lemon juice and honey

(we love using wildflower local honey as it helps combat allergies too),

it doesn’t taste all that bad.

Author: Marina
Ingredients
  • 2 inch fresh ginger
  • 2 inch cinnamon bark
  • 5-6 peppercorns
  • 4 cloves
  • 2 cups water
  • Juice from 1 lemon
  • Honey- to sweeten as per taste
Instructions
  1. In a pan, pour the water and boil the ginger, cinnamon, peppercorns and cloves on a low flame for 15-20 minutes. {If you can grind all the ingredients, (minus the water)the juice from the ginger, cloves and pepper will mix better.}
  2. The color of the water should darken and the water should reduce to about 1 cup.
  3. Set aside and once cool, squeeze a lemon, take a tsp of the juice, mix with a tsp of honey and a tbsp of the concoction. Have this mixture at least every 3-4 hours for 1-2 days and see the difference! (You can also dilute the concoction with water and serve it with lemon juice and honey like a brewed tea.)

Let me know if you made any adjustments to the recipe.

The odds are you will be stocking up on these ingredients once you do.

What if I don’t want to buy all these ingredients? Any other natural remedy recommendations?

Yes!

Ask any of my friends, and they will tell you how a packet of Samahan dissolved in hot water has helped soothe a cough and sore throat.

Alternately, a glass of warm water with the juice of half a lemon squeezed in (or a cube of lemon) and a teaspoon of honey also helps!

Now, none of these remedies are a do-once-and-done recommendation.

You will need to do this a few times in a day to see complete results.

Also, it is important to note that everyone’s body is different. What may help one person may not help another.

Both these remedies are natural, so give both or either a try.
