Getting on a plane with a toddler can be a little challenging! Here are 5 things you should never forget to pack when flying with a toddler.
Flying with a toddler in tow does not need to feel like walking on a bed of heated coals barefoot.
It can be a breeze if you’re prepared.
Several summers ago, my family spent five fantastic weeks in India.
I would be lying if I said I was not a little stressed about the journey to and from, considering we had a very active toddler in tow.
With 15 hours on one flight en route to India, I knew I had to be prepared!
5 things to remember when flying with a toddler in tow
Besides the obvious FAA recommendations when flying with a toddler, I have a few “keep this in mind” tips too:
1. Always pack two extra sets of clothes for your toddler, actually make that three, and a set for you.
These sets should be in your hand luggage or backpack.
You never know when a change of clothes may be called for.
2. Make sure you carry a generously sized diaper bag.
There are so many baby diaper bags to choose from, and no, I don’t have preferences.
The ones that have served me the best have been roomy, easy to clean, and designed with more than just 3 pockets!
My bag carried diapers, wipes, my favorite toddler travel snacks, entertainment (books, toys) etc.
Need quiet and chaos-free entertainment ideas? Here are a few:
- Melissa & Doug dress-up dolls
- Stickers
- Coloring books, activity books and crayons
- A new favorite character toy (the element of surprise and excitement in seeing a new toy always helps)
- Bendaroos
- Homemade play dough
Here are a few more toddler entertainment ideas.
3. Pack lollipops
I personally think toddlers are too young to chew gum, so don’t forget the lollipops for take-off and landing to prevent the ears from popping.
If your toddler still breastfeeds, nurse on take off and landing. The sucking movement will help relieve pressure build up in the ears and “ear popping”.
4. Try to work in time to rest
While traveling on a plane is fun, the excitement can build up to tire a young child, especially if you have a long flight.
If your child has a favorite snuggle toy and blankie, carry those along.
Carry a few books to read stories to help encourage those zzzzzs along.
5. Be alert for any signs of motion sickness
Motion sickness on any mode of travel is uncomfortable and stressful for toddlers, especially.
Read these tips to help your child avoid motion sickness when flying.
