With the Christmas holidays right around the corner and the family’s vacation planning chore on your shoulders, I know how difficult the hunt can be. It isn’t easy to find a hotel that is affordable, offers you all the required amenities for your stay and provide your family with activities to keep everyone happy…after all that would be the perfect hotel, right?

While I can’t whip out an unrealistic perfect hotel recommendation, I can recommend a property that, in my family’s books, does come pretty close.

Two weeks ago our family made a quick trip to San Antonio to celebrate my birthday and while there we stayed at theHyatt Regency San Antonio, bang on a tourist’s “must visit” -the Riverwalk. For us the location was a big deal.

We’ve traveled to San Antonio on several occasions over a three year span but it was only on this trip that we were able to really enjoy the beauty of the city, thanks to how close our hotel was to all the “must see” places on any tourist’s list. With two little ones in tow it helped being able to run back to our room, take naps or wash up and head out again to the next destination with just a hop skip and jump…on foot!

How close is close?

We decided to explore the downtown San Antonio area around which we stayed and within less than a 2 mile radius we were able to visit the historic Alamo, the Children’s Museum, the RiverCenter Mall, Ripleys museum, the IMAX theater and more! The Alamo is actually just across the street (and adjacent to the same you can even hop into a horse drawn carriage for about 20$ an adult and take a 20 minute trot around the area!) and the Riverwalk can be accessed if you just step out of the hotel!

How much closer to the heart of a city can one get?

Wow!

Comfort

As a Mom I’m considered to be quite picky especially while on a trip. I need to be able to come back to a room that meets my standards- a room that is equipped with everything I need on my stay- a microwave, mini fridge, ironing board, clean bathrooms , clean and uncrumpled bed linen and the room has to smell fresh. The Regency’s rooms passed the test and I loved that the suite we stayed in even had enough room for the kids to run up and down. (I think they placed us at one end of the floor to muffle the exhilarated shrieks our two would let out!)

“Mama, I’m hungry!”

Hubby always says I carry snacks for the kids as if we’re going on a five day expedition with no access to a restaurant or store! I ofcourse have the last laugh when I see him rummaging through the stash  late at night!!

You may not pack like I do when we go on a trip so it does help to know that the Hyatt Regency has a 24 hour coffee shop with the Einstein Bros Bagels in their lobby. (Yes you can even order pepperoni pizza bagels there. Bunny girl was thrilled!)

Our family enjoys good food, so I highly recommend eating at the Q. Their breakfast buffet is hearty (the breakfast muffins and pastries are packed with rich goodness!) but their lunch buffet is what really hit the spot. If you loved bbq mains and sides then you will really gorge on all the soul food served. (Hubby was in bbq bliss-land!!)

E.B. Mommy Recommends:

To really enjoy staying at this property I would suggest leaving your car parked at the hotel parking lot (this is in the building across the street, designated for hotel guests exclusively. There is a daily charge that will be added to your room tab) after you check in.

Walk around the downtown area and make the most of all the tourist attractions close by.

And if you aren’t too queasy about heights, I recommend asking for a room on one of the higher floors, facing the Riverwalk because the view is absolutely gorgeous!

.

I have to add that the hotel does not have many in-house activities for their guests. You can ofcourse take a swim in their rooftop pool that offers a 360 degree birds eye view of downtown San Antonio, relax at the Spa or work out in their state of the art gym but then that’s about it.

But then come to think of it that makes sense. Why would one want to do stuff indoors when you can enjoy San Antonio’s best spots with the hotel’s location in the heart of it all?!

.

.

The cordial guest relations personnel, the great on-property dining, fantastic access to some of the best San Antonio tourist attractions and room comfort sealed the decision for us.

We definitely have a new favorite hotel on our list!

  1. Yeah, I am considered picky too… A family with smaller kids needs all those commodities for sure!!

Thanks for the review, this looks like a fantastic place to stay!!

  2. A few of my hotel requirements are a microwave and refrigerator! With little kids, it’s necessary to ensure they have the comforts of home. I want to provide my daughter with healthy snacks when we travel so being to keep cheese sticks, yogurt, etc. in the room is a huge plus! Love that Hyatt Regency offers this. Now, off to book my trip to SA!
