Jingle was a little over 3 months old when we brought her home from our local animal shelter. With a mix of German Shepherd and Chow Chow in her DNA, we knew she would grow to be a strong, medium-sized dog but recognized we needed to do our part to help her thrive.

If you’re welcoming a dog into your home for the first time, don’t be overwhelmed with all the pet resources out there. If you keep these important tips in mind, you will be able to really enjoy your sweet pup/dog as she fills your family’s hearts one wag, slobber-filled lick and grateful paw at a time.

Support your dog’s growth with the right food

Ensure your dog stays hydrated.

If you notice you don’t have to re-fill your dog’s water bowl some time during the day, make it a point to watch her drink some water.

Dehydration will zap a dog of strength, health and energy.

Keep your dog active and challenge her mind to stay sharp!

This does not have to be anything elaborate. A walk every evening and/or morning, playing fetch in your backyard or even taking her to the local dog park, will keep her physically fit.

Teaching your dog basic tricks will also keep her mind sharp but remember to always reward her with a nutritious treat when she follows through with direction.

Spend time with your dog

Now, this does mean quality time, through the day and not just for a few minutes at the end of the day or in the morning before you head out the door. Your dog’s emotional health affects her physically and no, food and toys can never be considered a replacement for love. Loving on her, indulging her with belly rubs and lots of hugs will give your dog the security she needs.

Keep her well-being a priority.
