My husband’s father visits us every two years or so. The distance makes travel anything but easy on him, but the yearning to be with us gives him the push to travel those 18 odd hours, across the continents.

This year his visit was a special one as Hubs planned his stay around Dad’s 80th birthday.

A Celebration Staycation at the Holiday Inn San Antonio-Riverwalk.

Of all the places visited in Texas, Daddy has always had a soft corner for San Antonio, so that made choosing our celebration staycation destination so much easier. Keeping in mind the proximity to attractions we thought he would be interested in, the location and TripAdvisor recommendations, we chose the Holiday Inn San Antonio-Riverwalk.

The property sits on San Antonio’s Riverwalk but in a quieter segment of the same, which makes it great as the foot traffic below the property isn’t too much. This made it perfect for Daddy to step out of the room, use the hotel’s river access to walk out to the same, sit on a bench and just peacefully watch the ducks swim by.

Comfort and Convenience.

Daddy loves the crazy chatter and activity with the kids but there are times when he really just needs to be shut off from the noise. Booking a room and a suite adjacent to each other, with an inter-connecting door was the best decision, in that regard.

With 2 king beds and a sofa bed, in total, the sleeping arrangements were more than comfortable for our family of 6. (3 adults, 2 kids and a toddler)

And having the living area with the attached kitchenette, sandwiched between the two rooms, made it feel like we were home away from home. Dad and Hubs would sit around the dining table drinking tea and chatting while the kids would play board games on the floor.

To put it simply, it was a relaxing 3 days away from the regular routine of school, work and activity.

On-site dining facilities

Even though the area has some fantastic restaurants and eateries, it was just so convenient to take the lift and go downstairs to enjoy a meal on property, at the Window On The River Lounge/Restaurant without time constraints.

That way even if Baby Girl got a little restless, there was a lovely view (ducks included!) that could entertain her

or one of us could take her upstairs to play while everyone else enjoyed sitting around the table, while enjoying the rest of the meal at leisure.

But besides all that, the one reason we chose to dine at the restaurant was the food.

Great flavors, generous servings, friendly servers, a child-friendly ambiance and the kids ate free.

The property also has a 24×7 Grab-and-Go cafe that serves muffins, pastries, wraps and beverages.

Proximity to…so much!

If you’ve been to San Antonio’s Downtown area you will know that parking can get to be a pain especially if you want to visit any of the attractions. The hotel is located close to a number of the popular attractions so we left our car parked at the hotel and walked to each one. Nothing was too far away so Daddy and the kids didn’t mind heading out for each, especially since there were so many interesting spots we discovered while on foot.

In the morning, before heading out, we would stop for breakfast at Starbucks, across the road. (Literally a hop, skip and a jump away!)

During Daddy’s 80th birthday Celebration Staycation, we explored Downtown San Antonio and spent time at places our birthday boy wanted to visit like the historic Alamo,

Buckhorn Museum and the Texas Ranger Museum,

Louis Tussauds Wax Museum,

the Tower Of Americas,

and on the drive back home, the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch.

It was three packed days of fun but at the end of each day we got a comfortable and sound night’s sleep. It was a relaxing trip, the way Kemmons Wilson would have wanted it to be so,

and we made more than a fair share of memories.
