My husband has always found it hard to fall asleep easily. Most nights while we’re asleep, he’s lying in bed with his eyes wide open staring at the ceiling. And most often than not, he’ll get out of bed and go work on his laptop for an hour or two before he’s able to actually close his eyes and sleep. While he’s able to do something productive during the time, the shortened amount of time he gets to sleep in the end does take a toll on him the next day.

Ways to fall asleep easily.

While different things work for different people, through trial and error, we’ve found Hubs is able to get a few extra hours of sleep when he does or doesn’t do the following:

  1. Avoiding that relaxing cup of tea right after work at 5.30 pm helps. While that extra kick of caffeine is needed when you still have a few hours of the day to go, it’s better to sacrifice the same and have a hot cup of milk instead.
  2. Taking a warm bath is a definite relaxant.
  3. Prior to that bath, if you’re able to squeeze in a 30 minute long brisk walk, jog around your neighborhood or some form of consistent physical activity, is a proven aid to getting your body to relax for the night.
  4. We’ve also found diluting lavender and SleepyIze essential oils and applying a drop or two on the pillows has helped.
  5. Blocking off lights from outside with heavy curtains and ensuring the room is pitch dark has worked too.
  6. Hubs also had the habit of kicking off the sheets at night, so most nights he would get up feeling cold and then finds it hard to fall asleep again. The solution? Socks!

Beyond Tired

Insomnia and the struggle to fall asleep quickly is not uncommon. Beyond Tired is a great resource hub to help and inspire those struggling to get more sleep at night.

The site shares real life experiences of 4 Beyond Tired participants whose stories resonate well with readers like them. Of the 4, Hubs related the most to Zac’s struggle of staying up till 2 or 3 in the morning and then falling asleep. Here they share why getting a better night’s sleep is important.

The National Sleep Foundation recommends adults aged 18 to 64 get 7-9 hours of sleep daily and between 7 and 8 hours for adults aged 65 and older. If you’re not getting anything close to those numbers, you may want to try what has worked for Hubs. If you still find it hard to fall asleep each night, don’t hold back from visiting your physician.

The inability to get enough sleep should never be taken lightly.
