Earlier this morning, Bunny Boo and I spent some time at Bunny girl’s preschool watching a performance. Once the show ended, the kids trooped back to their classrooms while we slowly headed off to the parking lot to drive back home.
Around the same time, a group of elderly folk had been dispersed from their morning Bible study and were slowly making their way to their respective rides back home. I thought I’d pick up step and walk quickly to the car but I felt an impression to “Slow Down” and as I did an old man using a walker stopped and looked at Bunny Boo. He asked him his name and my happy little munchkin grinned his widest toothless smile in reply. The man’s wearied face lit up and before we knew it we were surrounded by two other elderly men and an elderly woman. They spent about ten minutes playing with my little one who entertained them with his baby babble and smiles, and then they stepped into their cars.
As I sat in the car and slipped the key into the ignition I thought of the few minutes we spent. It may not have meant a big deal to me or Bunny Boo but I know the people we met left happy.
Sometimes God wants us to stop rushing around and to just stop and slow down. We need to pray that God makes us sensitive to the needs of those around us, even if we don’t know who they are.
There are so many elderly folk around us. So many stay alone while others stay in nursing homes. There are many who don’t even have family visit them as they consider their ailing health a burden to their youthful, regular routines.
On Day 18 of the 30 Day Giving Challenge, will you try and identify an elderly man, woman, couple or group and GIVE them your time, a hug, a smile or just a word of encouragement?
You don’t know what they’ve gone through or what they are going through and sometimes just spending a little time with them can lift up their spirits.
I pray that the Love of Christ may abound in you and through you and that God may touch the lives of the elderly you meet.
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.
(1 John 4:7)
