Spending the holidays at South Padre Island KOA Holiday

I’ve never really been an outdoorsy person, so the thought of camping is not a very reassuring one for me. When our family was invited to spend a weekend over at South Padre Island’s KOA I had my apprehensions…
Would there be a tent involved? How would I cook? What sort of bathroom facilities would we have?
It was only after I spent a few days researching Kampgrounds of America’s (KOA) website that I realized I had nothing to worry about.

Dependent on whether you choose a KOA Journey, a KOA Holiday or a KOA Resort, your experience will be different, yet all come with the promise of being memorable.
The South Padre Island KOA Holiday is any glamper’s paradise with patio RV sites, deluxe cabins with bathrooms and the proximity to walk to popular restaurants like Pier 19, the beach and the pier. (When you check in ask if they have a discount card to any of the restaurants closeby. We got a 10% off when we dined at Pier 19)
For die-hard camping fans, the ground also houses premium tent sites.
As with any KOA site, every resident is provided with free access to Wi-fi, laundry facilities, a playground, 
an on-site convenience store and yes, a Kamp K9 pet park for the 4 legged family members.
We stayed in a deluxe cabin with a bedroom housing a queen bed, a fully equipped kitchen, a living area with a pull-out sofa bed, a bunkbed set opposite the bathroom and a homely deck overlooking the waterfront.
While the outsides of the cabin looked quite unassuming,
walking into the cabin automatically made us feel right at home. (It made me hope our family can own a small get-away home similar to the cabin, with a gorgeous view of the waterfront, someday.)
The campground has a meeting room that’s available in need, a fitness center, a common lounge area,
a pool that’s open year round, a hot tub/sauna and the playground.
The kids asked to swim in the pool once during our stay but preferred instead to take a 5 minute drive to the quiet beach access closeby. And thanks to our choice of timings on both days, it was as if we had our own private beach!
We were also blessed to catch one of the last turtle hatchling releases of the season, from that very same beach access
and catch fireworks from across the pier, a hop, skip and a jump away from our cabin.
Every weekend Tom and Stacie Brooks, the incredibly sweet managers at the South Padre Island KOA who’ve been doing this for the past 19 years, host various events for the residents on-site. From a s’mores making get together
to a movie night with popcorn and an icecream social that the kids enjoyed thoroughly!
One of my favorite times in the day was breakfast time as we’d all sit around the deck table outside and watch the birds swoop down for fish, fishermen waiting for that catch of the day and boats sail by on the waterfront.
After breakfast, the kids would drop crumbs over the ledge to feed the gorgeous tiny blue and yellow crabs they discovered living in holes, in the mud, leading to the waterway.
