Trends are changing when it comes to vacations, and many people are waiting until just a few weeks before departure to book their break.

Last minute holidays can have huge appeal to families, especially those with a strict household budget, but what are the main pros and cons?

The Pros and Cons of Booking a Last Minute Family Vacation

The positive side

The savings can be a big reward when booking a late deal. Waiting to book a last minute holiday can be really handy for those who don’t want to make a serious financial commitment, several months in advance. Perhaps you are unsure how much money you can spare. Booking a late deal means you have no commitment and can base your vacation plans around how much you have to spend nearer the time.
What’s more, online travel agents and popular coupon sites are constantly advertising last minute attraction, resort and property package deals that claim dramatically reduced rates. It is important to check exactly what you are getting for your money to ensure that it truly is a bargain. Keeping track of vacation prices in the months leading up to booking should help you decide.

A big plus is if you plan to make it a road trip, irrespective of the season, taking your trip to the road will save you quite a bit of money, versus air tickets especially if you have a large family.

Potential drawbacks

The likelihood is that you are booking your vacation during school break. Because this is a popular time to go on holiday you could find that there is less choice with hotels as the summer months approach. Of course, this is only an issue if you have your heart set on a particular destination or resort. Likewise, those who are travelling outside school break shouldn’t find this a problem.

Of course, booking last minute means that you won’t know where you are going until the last minute.  This leaves less time for researching the destination, vacation shopping, packing and organizing.

The best thing to do is know when you are going well in advance, as this at least means you can cancel your children’s other commitments and book time off  from work.

Then, if you still want to risk the last minute approach, you have some plans in place already and could still get a bargain in the process.

In the end, whether or not a last minute holiday will suit your family depends on when you wish to travel and how concerned you are with where you stay.

By researching your options there’s no reason why you can’t find a good last minute deal.
