Welcoming a new baby home is always exciting but there’s always a lot of preparation prior to his/her arrival.

Whether your baby is healthy or sick, the medicine cabinet will likely become one of your go-to parenting resources.

A key baby safety practice is to always keep the cabinet locked so little ones don’t swallow anything they shouldn’t.

Here’s what to have at home to keep your baby safe.

Medicine Cabinet Must-Haves for Baby

Most of the time, you’ll just be treating minor bumps and scrapes, so stock up on baby safety essentials, like antibiotic ointment, tweezers, and gauze. Calamine lotion is also a good idea for certain rashes and insect bites. And while you’re at it, store an ice pack and self-adhesive bandages in a variety of shapes and sizes (and princess or superhero designs!).

In case of fever, keep acetaminophen and ibuprofen on hand, though it’s best to contact your pediatrician before administering them to your sick baby. Also stock some electrolyte solution to combat dehydration caused by diarrhea or vomiting. Children’s cough syrup used to be a medicine cabinet staple, but lately experts have stopped recommending it for young kids. (Research shows that it doesn’t really help, and it poses a small risk of serious side effects.)

Be sure to keep an eye on all expiration dates and restock as needed.

If your healthy baby or toddler takes vitamins, you may want to store them in your medicine cabinet as well, along with a rectal thermometer for taking his temperature.

Also post phone numbers for emergency help and poison control centers on the inside of the cabinet door, as well as near all phones.

You might want to put your baby’s latest weight (update it regularly) with these numbers so you or a babysitter have it in case it’s requested during a call

  1. This is a good list and I agree (from learning the hard way) that it’s a good idea to keep a good stock of supplies like this because otherwise, you’ll end up running to the store at 3am!

  2. Great list!! I swear I always try to stock up… then once we need it it’s expired! Time flies so fast!!

  3. Good idea to keep those stats and numbers posted within reach. I didn’t realize they had stopped recommending cough syrup for kids as much.

  4. I love all of these suggestions, my cousin is expecting her first baby.. I am going to share this with her. Thanks 😉

  5. A nose plunger, and depending upon the baby’s age, saline mist definitely comes in handy.

  6. I always keep eucalyptus rub for coughs on hand. Rub it on chest and feet and the coughing usually clears in 48 hours for my kids!

  7. I keep a dosage chart from my pediatrician that tells you how much tylenol you can administer by weight taped to the inside of my medicine cabinet. That way I know exactly how much to give my kiddos when they are sick.

  8. My second born is just 4 months but having a toddler too makes it easy for these tips to slip my mind. Thanks for the reminder!

  9. Great list of must haves for sure. We don’t medicate, so that’s not an issue for us, but keeping the dosage chart some place nearby is a great idea! One of my must haves is my Nose Frida for sucking the snot out – I can’t seem to find anything as good as that one. I’m big on the vitamin D for sickness too and Eucalyptus mixed with coconut oil for rubbing on the chest.

  10. This is a great list! I need to stock up so I don’t have to run to the store the second someone in my home gets sick. Thanks for the advice.

  11. This is such a great list. I never would have thought of putting my babies weight on there for sitters.

  12. “Baby Rub” (baby Vicks) rubbed on soles of feet then covered with socks is a great bedtime remedy for congestion. Works like a charm for my little one and even us adults.

  13. This is a great list, I have four kids and we have to keep a huge arsenal of everything like this. You can never have too many bandaids, that is for sure.
